SUMMARY:Teaching Grammar: A Deductive Approach
DESCRIPTION:Julia Lippold\, Lauriston Girls School\nThursday 30 July\, 3:45-5:15 pm\nOnline Webinar\n*LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER: Registrations close 2pm Thursday 30 July*\nTeaching grammar can be fraught with challenges. In the EAL setting\, students can find understanding syntactical metalanguage as well as abstract concepts challenging. So how do we make grammar accessible to EAL students? My approach to teaching grammar is\, at its core\, deductive rather than didactic encouraging students to figure out rules and patterns deductively rather than being expressly instructed. Getting students involved in the learning process is key to this method: a highly visual\, contextualised and participatory pedagogy. \nThis session will guide teachers through this deductive method as they too participate in the learning process. Topics covered will include: \n– Why is grammar so important?\n– Connections to the F-10 EAL Curriculum and National Curriculum (EAL Achievement Standards)\n– Deductive pedagogy\n– Sample grammar lessons and teaching tips aimed at EAL students (including\, phrasal verbs\, the conditional\, nominalisation\, shades of modality\, coordinating and subordinating conjunctions\, punctuation and parts of speech) \nJulia Lippold is an EAL and TESOL specialist teacher and ‘teacherpenerur’ with over 14 years of TESOL teaching experience. She has taught in both the New Arrivals and independent sectors\, and also in Korea. She began her formal teaching career at Blackburn English Language School in Melbourne and as a volunteer tutor working with refugees on Temporary Protection Visas. At Blackburn ELS\, Julia worked as a Leading Teacher\, Head of Senior School\, and International Student Coordinator maintaining close links with the International Division at the Victorian Department of Education and Training. Julia currently teaches at Lauriston Girls’ School in the role of EAL Coordinator (Years 7-12) where she has had an integral role in establishing the EAL program. Julia holds a Bachelor of Arts (Languages) with Honours\, a Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary)\, a Master of Public and International Law and a Graduate Certificate in Literary Classics. In addition to teaching\, she supports staff in accommodating the needs of EAL students and delivers staff professional learning workshops. Julia is a VicTESOL representative of the Australian Council of TESOL Associations (ACTA)\, an affiliate of both VicTESOL and VATE\, is actively involved in the VCAA F-10 EAL Curriculum for Victorian Schools Consultation Review\, is a member of the VCAA VCE Examination Development EAL Reviewing Panel\, and is the founder and creator of Zealous English. Julia is passionate about teaching EAL and creating user-friendly resources for both teachers and students. \nCost: \n\n$10 – VicTESOL Members (including other state & territory TESOL associations affiliated with ACTA) \n$20 – Non-members \n\nCLICK HERE TO BECOME A MEMBER OF VICTESOL FOR 2020 \n  \nNotes about attending a VicTESOL webinar: \nPrior to this event\, you will be sent an email containing a link to join the webinar using the online webinar platform Zoom.  We suggest you test the link on your computer and that you allow time to download Zoom if required. SUMMARY:Webinar - Intercultural communication in the adult EAL classroom: Concepts and classroom practice
DESCRIPTION:Skye Playsted \nThursday 14 May\, 4-5pm \nOnline Webinar \nWhen we think of the term ‘culture’\, it can be easy to focus on concrete elements such as art\, music\, clothing or food. However\, these visible aspects are only the tip of the cultural iceberg (Ting-Toomey & Chung\, 2011). Deeper cultural assumptions are hidden from view and are not as easy to identify. These can include our beliefs about learning and teaching\, expectations of politeness\, values\, social norms or unspoken conversational ‘taboos’. Misunderstandings can easily occur across cultures in these areas. A deeper understanding of the ways in which culture and language influence our views of the world and how we communicate is needed (DeCapua & Wintergerst\, 2016). Drawing on DeCapua’s (2018) Culture Myths: Applying Second Language Research to Classroom Teaching\, this session offers teachers an opportunity to consider and ‘unpack’ some commonly held ‘myths’ about culture which affect learning and teaching in the adult EAL classroom. \nSkye Playsted is an educator with over 20 years of teaching experience as a second language and music teacher in Australian schools. She has taught English to adult students as a volunteer in community refugee support groups\, and has been teaching in vocational colleges and university academic English programs in the Refugee Welcome Zone of Toowoomba\, Queensland. Skye completed her M Ed (TESOL) via distance through the University of Wollongong\, NSW\, and has recently moved to Brisbane with her family. She has been awarded a PhD scholarship through the Australian government research training program\, to research reflective practice\, teacher cognition and oral communication pedagogy in beginner adult English language teaching. \nVicTESOL Member $10 \nNon-member $20    Click here for further information about joining VicTESOL. \n* REGISTRATIONS FOR THIS EVENT CLOSE AT 12 NOON ON THURSDAY 14 MAY 2020 * \n  \nNotes about attending a VicTESOL webinar: \nPrior to this event\, you will be sent an email containing a link to join the webinar using the online webinar platform Zoom.  We suggest you test the link on your computer and that you allow time to download Zoom if required. SUMMARY:The diverse interactions of Aboriginal EALD speakers: Codeswitching\, translanguaging or “whatever”….
DESCRIPTION:Professor Rhonda Oliver\, Curtin University \nMonday 28 October\, 7-8pm (Australian Eastern Standard Daylight Savings Time) \nFree Online Webinar \n\nClick here to register!\n\nAustralian Aboriginal people interact in diverse ways and this is especially the case for those who grow up and live in rural and remote locations. In such locations Standard Australian English (SAE) is often not spoken as the residents’ first language or dialect\, instead they may have either traditional Indigenous language(s) or an English-lexified creole as their first language (L1)\, or they may have Aboriginal English (AE) as their first dialect. In addition\, most will also use AE as the lingua franca to communicate with other Aboriginal people who do not share their home language. For Aboriginal people\, particularly those living in the rural and remote communities\, the importance of language (i.e.\, traditional languages\, creoles and AE)\, both for the maintenance of culture and as a marker of Aboriginality\, should not be underestimated. For younger people in particular\, their Aboriginal languages contribute in significant ways to the formation of their self-identity. At the same time\, however\, to fully participate in mainstream Australian society Aboriginal people also need to develop an awareness of and have skills in using SAE. This is especially the case for those studying in schools and universities. To address this need\, Aboriginal students have been encouraged and\, at times\, explicitly taught to codeswitch – changing from their home language to SAE within the classroom. This has been implemented on the assumption that written literacy development will emerge from such a foundation. Yet despite this\, educational outcomes (e.g.\, NAPLAN results) show they continue to achieve under the national standard in language and literacy (ACARA\, 2012). While formal success in SAE seems elusive\, many Aboriginal speakers\, including children\, demonstrate a complex linguistic repertoire. Rather than simply switching from one language to another they move fluidly between their various linguistic codes and do so as required by the context\, audience\, and the learning environment. In this presentation I will describe various observational data showing the diverse ways and various modes in which they do this and make suggestions for how pedagogy (including assessment) can move beyond our current monolinguistic hegemony to one that is Informed by a translanguaging perspective (Garcia & Wei\, 2014). \n\nProfessor Rhonda Oliver is Head of the School of Education at Curtin University\, Perth\, Australia. She is widely published in the area of second language acquisition with more than 4\,000 citations to her publications. Internationally she is best known for her work in relation to child language learners. As well as work within the interactionist paradigm\, she has also conducted numerous studies on language learners in schools and universities. She has also undertaken work in the area of Aboriginal education\, particularly for those students who have Standard Australia English as their second language or dialect. \n\nTo register\, please click here to visit: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/c6f380470de8e07966858a512be5123a\nAfter registering\, you will immediately receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.  Reminders about this event will also be sent to you closer to the date. \n\n

SUMMARY:Foundation House: New Report - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Monday 17 June\, 4-5pm\, online \nGreg Gow\, Program Coordinator\, Schools Support Program & Matt Rodger\, Schools Support Officer West Region\, Schools Support Program \n‘School is where you need to be equal and learn’: Insights from students of refugee backgrounds on learning and engagement in Victorian secondary schools (2019) \nThis report presents the findings of a research project conducted by the Schools Support Program at the Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture (Foundation House). This project sought out the insights of students of refugee backgrounds on the barriers and facilitators to learning and engagement at school. Focus groups were conducted at three Victorian secondary schools\, with 51 students (aged 13-19). The students were all from refugee backgrounds and had arrived in Australia within the past seven years. Through this project the Schools Support Program was able to learn directly from students of refugee backgrounds and position them\, through their lived experience\, as experts on ‘what works’ to support them at school. \nIn this webinar\, Greg and Matt will take you through the findings of this report and provide insights into how this report can inform practice at your school. \nThis is a free event. Please complete a RSVP on the left of the screen to participate.

SUMMARY:Measuring EAL Students’ Growth Using Visible Learning and Data - Secondary *SOLD OUT*
DESCRIPTION:Jesus Camacho-Morles and Julia Lippold\nBastow Institute of Educational Leadership\, North Melbourne\nMonday 20th May\, 5-6:30pm \n“When teaching and learning are visible there is a greater likelihood of students reaching higher levels of achievement” (John Hattie). \nThis session will focus on the nexus between data analytics and EAL student growth. Jesus Camacho-Morles and Julia Lippold will present together on the importance of data collection in measuring students’ growth within the EAL setting. Data analytics is crucial in the “information age” for professionals as well as students. Schools are essentially responsible for using data to inform decisions at the school\, class and individual student level. However\, what role does the individual EAL teacher play in this? How can we move from simply placing students on the EAL Developmental Continuum as an assessment tool for English language proficiency to evaluating the progress of our students over time? Competence based assessment is only part of the work we should be doing. How do we measure these other student\, teacher and school related factors that are associated with educational outcomes of EAL students? In essence\, there is a need for collecting reliable and valid evidence as opposed to judgement. \nThe use of TEAL in conjunction with Jesus’ ‘Learning Growth Estimator’ (an assessment tool that estimates the amount of learning growth achieved by students in a given period\, and uses John Hattie’s ‘Visible Learning’ framework for interpretation) will be discussed\, as well as examples from data collected in middle years EAL classes at Lauriston Girls’ School over the course of 2018. How this data has been used to inform teaching and curriculum development in the years 7-10 EAL curriculum in 2019 will also be revealed. \nThis session is designed for secondary school teachers. \nPresenters \nJesus Camacho-Morles is an educationalist who specializes in the use of psychometrics to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of educational programs\, institutions\, and psycho-pedagogical interventions. He has extensive experience as a teacher\, lecturer\, and consultant in several key areas\, including assessment and evaluation\, data visualization\, and research methods\, and is currently undertaking his Ph.D. in Education Assessment and Evaluation at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education. His many other qualifications include a Masters degree in Education and a postgraduate diploma in Research Methods and Diagnosis in Education. Jesus has designed several learning tools having fellow teachers in mind\, intending them as easy-to-use tools that would efficiently analyze data on their behalf and provide them with meaningful reports on their teaching efforts and guide them in their future interventions. \nJulia is a ‘teacherpreneur’; she is the founder and creator of ‘Zealous English’ – a blog and YouTube channel about middle-years EAL. She holds a BA (Languages) with Honours\, a Grad Dip of Education (Sec)\, a Masters of Public and International Law\, and is currently completing a Grad Cert of Literary Classics. She is also the EAL Coordinator (Years 7-12) at Lauriston Girls’ School in Melbourne\, where she has had an integral role in establishing the EAL program. She also supports mainstream teachers who have EAL students and delivers staff professional learning workshops. Julia has taught in the New Arrivals and Independent School sectors\, and in Korea. She was also a Leading Teacher and International Student Coordinator at Blackburn English Language School. Julia is a VicTESOL Committee Member\, an Australian Council of TESOL Associations (ACTA) representative\, and is actively involved in the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority (VCAA) EAL curriculum F-10 for the Victorian Schools Consultation Review. \nMembers $10\nNon-members $20

SUMMARY:Leading EALD Professional Learning Within Schools - Free Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Mei French\, Ashima Suri and Rita Alexander \nThursday 14 March 2019\, 4:30 – 5:30 pm (Victorian Time) \nIn multicultural and multilingual school contexts\, it is beneficial for all teachers to develop strong intercultural relationship skills and understand the role of multilingualism in the classroom in order to support English learning across the curriculum. As colleagues in a South Australian secondary school\, Mei\, Ashima\, and Rita\, designed and delivered a whole-school professional learning program which addressed this need. They advocated for EALD students as individuals and experts\, and invited colleagues to learn more about the lives\, strengths and resources of the EALD learners in their classes. Over the course of a school year\, teachers were encouraged to take on the role of learner\, to listen to students’ stories\, and to learn new skills from them. Teachers reported improved understanding of their students’ life experiences\, deeper empathy\, more positive relationships\, and adopted more creative approaches to pedagogy that support English learning across the curriculum. While the EALD specialists running these workshops reported feeling re-energised by their role in the program. This professional learning program was memorable\, sustainable and allowed all teachers to rethink themselves as co-learners with EALD students. \nIn this webinar\, Mei\, Ashima and Rita will outline the program they conducted in the school\, and give advice to webinar participants about planning a professional learning program for their own context\, drawing on the EALD elaborations to the AITSL standards. \nPlease note that this webinar will cover some of the same content as Mei\, Ashima and Rita’s presentation on the same topic at the ACTA Conference held in Adelaide in 2018. \nThe webinar will take place online. Participants will be emailed information about accessing the web-based platform prior to the event. \nPresenters\nMei\, Ashima and Rita worked together teaching multilingual young women at a South Australian secondary school. \nNow based in Canberra\, Mei French is an EALD specialist\, who combines secondary school teaching with teacher education and curriculum development. She has been an active contributor to advocacy and professional learning through TESOL associations. Her PhD investigated the complex and purposeful multilingual practices of secondary school students and their teachers\, and the implications for practice and policy. \nAshima Suri is an EAL and Science teacher. As an EAL network teacher in Adelaide\, Ashima has worked across different schools\, supporting both students and staff to use different pedagogies to support the development of academic English for students. She takes particular interest in the many ways multilingual students contribute significantly to the school community. \nRita Alexander is an experienced teacher who has worked with EAL learners at all stages of schooling from early childhood to Year 12. Rita’s career has seen her work in a broad range of contexts across South Australia. Rita takes particular interest in harnessing students’ varied cultural and linguistic experiences to construct positive learning identities and supporting the learning of English language across the curriculum.
