And time again.\nCo-hosted with the School of Education\, La Trobe University\nStudents learn and teachers teach additional language in many different contexts\, and the learning expectations and outcomes vary greatly. Language learning outcomes in primary and secondary school classrooms are influenced by the availability of materials and resources\, teachers’ skill and preparation\, students’ L1 abilities\, family support and involvement\, peer influence\, etc. \nIn classrooms serving students at tertiary level or in adult education\, outcomes are influenced by most of the same things\, with students’ prior life and educational experiences\, including their L1 literacy skills playing a particularly large role. \nThere are substantial differences in the availability of these resources in different teaching and learning contexts. However\, one crucial resource is in short supply in nearly all learning contexts: time. \nDifferent solutions have been proposed for increasing time available for learning. In many contexts\, the age of beginning language learning at school has been lowered\, spreading instructional time over more years. Instead\, or sometimes in addition\, schools have adopted intensive or immersion and other content-based approaches to add hours for learning and teaching. \nIn this presentation\, we’ll start from the basics and talk about how much time is really needed for learning a new language and how much is available in different teaching/learning contexts. Then we will look at how to increase learning time in ways that have been shown to have the greatest long-term benefits. \n  \nBiography\nPatsy M. Lightbown is Distinguished Professor Emerita (Applied Linguistics) at Concordia University in Montreal. Since the 1970s\, her research has focused on the importance of time in second language learning and on the complementary roles of meaning-focused and language-focused activities. She has studied the acquisition of French\, English\, and Spanish in classrooms in Canada and the US. Her 2014 book Focus on Content-Based Language Teaching appears in an Oxford University Press series that she co-edits with Nina Spada\, with whom she co-authored How Languages Are Learned (OUP)\, an award-winning introduction to second language acquisition research for teachers\, now in its fourth edition. \n  \nPlease note that this will be a presentation style event and light refreshments will be included. \n  \nCost: VicTESOL Member $40 | Non-member $60

SUMMARY:Workshop: EAL and Vocabulary in context
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr Jenny Miller \nAlthough there is a growing awareness of the difficulties faced by EAL students in the mainstream\, pedagogical and curriculum reforms have been based primarily on monolingual perspectives. The presenter makes a case for a closer understanding of aspects of second language acquisition (SLA) principles\, and particularly vocabulary in context. Although the ACARA overview of EAL states that “the extent of vocabulary knowledge is one of the best predictors of literacy success”\, it is generally not a major classroom focus across the curriculum. \nThe role of vocabulary and strategies to integrate it in content-based teaching are suggested and discussed. \nDr Jenny Miller is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Monash University and consultant working with schools on addressing the needs of EAL students in the mainstream. \n

SUMMARY:Praxis of TESOL teaching
DESCRIPTION:Praxis\, practical wisdom\, practical intelligence or ‘history-making action’ (Kemmis 2010) requires educators to see beyond their immediate teaching practices and think\, what benefits the individual learner as well as the wider society now and in the future? A praxis-oriented educator aims to utilize all available knowledge and skills to fulfil the double purpose of education: “to prepare people to live well in a world worth living in” (Kemmis et al 2014\, 28). \nIn this seminar\, we will consider TESOL teaching from a praxis-perspective. How can TESOL-teachers prepare students to live well in a world worth living in while negotiating values and goals which are not universally shared? How can educators adjust their practices to meet the needs of diverse learners\, and what kind of knowledge and skills are required for this? After a brief glance at the praxis literature\, we will discuss the role of theory\, action and reflection in the work of TESOL teachers in Australia. In the end\, we will have a look if the views of Australian professionals correspond with the views of their Finnish colleagues. \n  \nPresenter Biography \nDr Mervi Kaukko is a visiting researcher at Monash University. She is currently conducting two Finnish-Australian research projects: one on refugee students’ views on their educational success\, and another focusing on the praxis development of teachers who teach refugee students. Both projects are conducted in collaboration with Associate Professor Jane Wilkinson (Monash University). \nBefore coming to Australia in 2016\, Mervi worked as a university lecturer (Global Education) at University of Oulu\, Finland\, and was involved in several projects related to refugee and migrant children\, and intercultural teacher education. Her research interests are in the mainly in the fields of refugee studies\, practice theories and global education\, focusing on topics such as children’s participation\, children’s rights\, school wellbeing and educational experiences.

The educational inequities between culturally and linguistically diverse students and privileged populations remain a significant issue for those concerned with socially just education. \nIn Australia there has been a proliferation of Homework Support Programs funded by Governments and welfare agencies targeting specific populations\, such as Indigenous and refugee students; many rely heavily on volunteer tutors. The rationale for homework support programs rests in the recognition that sociocultural contexts shape students’ capacities to take up the learning opportunities offered at home and at school. \nConceptualized as compensatory education for poor and culturally and linguistically diverse students\, after-school homework clubs and tutoring programs offer an alternative space for the completion of homework for students whose families may not have access to the forms of capital required to complete homework. \nThis presentation draws on a series of ethnographic studies of homework\, to examine the lived experience of homework for students and their families in socio culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Through case study snapshots from three Australian homework programs\, the presentation will explores the affordances of Homework Support Programs for productively reshaping learner dispositions and agency. \nBiography\nKirsten Hutchison is a senior lecturer in Language and Literacy at Deakin University and teaches in undergraduate\, masters and higher degree by research programs\, with a focus on early and middle years language and literacy teaching\, new and traditional literacies and community literacies. \nHer research and teaching interests are centred on language and literacy and the nexus between education and social justice. Several of her current research projects involve working with teachers and academics to develop digital and culturally responsive pedagogies\, work-integrated learning and internationalised curriculum. She coordinates a mentoring program at Deakin University which involves pre-service teachers collaboratively researching their literacy and teaching practices in culturally diverse secondary school communities. \nHer research experience also includes major projects funded by the Australian Research Council\, the Higher Education Equity Partnership Program\, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development Victoria\, the Catholic Education Office Melbourne and collaborations with the Centre for Multicultural Youth. \nCost   $20 Member    $30 Non-Members \nPlease note that VicTESOL reserves the right to use photos from the event for publicity and promotional purposes
