DESCRIPTION:Presenters: Margaret Corrigan & Liz Keenan \nMargaret is Manager of Carringbush Adult Education in Richmond and has worked for many years in a range of educational settings in Australia and Asia-Pacific. She is a current Fellow of the International Specialised Skills Institute and has recently returned from a trip to North America where she investigated models of Professional Development for teachers of adults. She is passionate about working towards achieving the best possible outcomes for learners in the community sector. \nElizabeth Keenan is an EAL teacher and teacher mentor at Carringbush Adult Education. She was awarded an International Specialised Skills Institute Fellowship in 2015 to investigate best practice pronunciation teaching and travelled to the USA as part of her study tour. She teaches a dedicated pronunciation class to beginner-level adult students. Elizabeth is developing effective methods to integrate pronunciation teaching into all areas of the curriculum. \nThis session will focus on sharing current research on teaching pronunciation and how Carringbush Adult Education has approached what can be a challenging skill to teach.

SUMMARY:Praxis of TESOL teaching
DESCRIPTION:Praxis\, practical wisdom\, practical intelligence or ‘history-making action’ (Kemmis 2010) requires educators to see beyond their immediate teaching practices and think\, what benefits the individual learner as well as the wider society now and in the future? A praxis-oriented educator aims to utilize all available knowledge and skills to fulfil the double purpose of education: “to prepare people to live well in a world worth living in” (Kemmis et al 2014\, 28).  \nIn this seminar\, we will consider TESOL teaching from a praxis-perspective. How can TESOL-teachers prepare students to live well in a world worth living in while negotiating values and goals which are not universally shared? How can educators adjust their practices to meet the needs of diverse learners\, and what kind of knowledge and skills are required for this? After a brief glance at the praxis literature\, we will discuss the role of theory\, action and reflection in the work of TESOL teachers in Australia. In the end\, we will have a look if the views of Australian professionals correspond with the views of their Finnish colleagues. \n  \nPresenter Biography \nDr Mervi Kaukko is a visiting researcher at Monash University. She is currently conducting two Finnish-Australian research projects: one on refugee students’ views on their educational success\, and another focusing on the praxis development of teachers who teach refugee students. Both projects are conducted in collaboration with Associate Professor Jane Wilkinson (Monash University).  \nBefore coming to Australia in 2016\, Mervi worked as a university lecturer (Global Education) at University of Oulu\, Finland\, and was involved in several projects related to refugee and migrant children\, and intercultural teacher education. Her research interests are in the mainly in the fields of refugee studies\, practice theories and global education\, focusing on topics such as children’s participation\, children’s rights\, school wellbeing and educational experiences.

Prior to that he worked as a mainstream teacher and then EAL teacher in the New Arrivals Program\, and in secondary schools in Victoria\, London in the UK\, and Vancouver\, British Columbia\, in Canada. He has a long history of involvement in EAL curriculum and assessment projects in Victoria and nationally. \n  \nJanet Saker worked for over 20 years in the ESL/EAL unit of the Department of Education\, Victoria\, developing range of EAL curriculum and assessment materials\, including the ESL Companion to the English CSF\, the EAL AusVELS\, ESL Course Advice\, EAL policy documents\, professional learning materials and teaching resources. Hanya has been an ESL teacher\, a Literacy Leader\, Learning Support Leader and Deputy Principal in her time with Catholic Education. Her current role is as a Team Leader\, Learning Diversity at Catholic Education Melbourne which includes responsibility for New Arrivals and Refugees\, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and Intervention. \nMercy Connect in Partnership with Catholic Education Melbourne\nMercy Connect is a support program supported by Catholic Education Melbourne operating in schools with Refugee Students\, assisting them to integrate into the Education system. The program is coordinated by Mercy Works Inc. which is a ministry of the Sisters of Mercy Institute (Australia and PNG). The program operates with volunteers with great success and volunteers work either individually or in small groups. \nAmalia Fawcett\nAmalia came to CMY after working for 14 years in the international aid and development sectors. Her area of specialisation was child rights and as such she has trained people around the world in both emergency and development situations. \nShe has an MA in African Studies from Yale University and an MSc in Refugee and Forced Migration from Oxford University. She has lived and worked in countries as diverse as Tanzania and Switzerland\, the Solomon Islands and the UK\, and has always trained in a multicultural environment. \nMoving into the role with CMY has enabled her to unite her academic background and professional experience with her love of training. \nKirsten Hutchison\nPresentation Abstract\nSide by Side: Exploring The Affordances of Homework Support Programs for Socially Just Education \nThe increasing cultural and linguistic diversity in schools in a globalised world is one of the most crucial challenges for educators. The educational inequities between culturally and linguistically diverse students and privileged populations remain a significant issue for those concerned with socially just education. \nIn Australia there has been a proliferation of Homework Support Programs funded by Governments and welfare agencies targeting specific populations\, such as Indigenous and refugee students; many rely heavily on volunteer tutors. The rationale for homework support programs rests in the recognition that sociocultural contexts shape students’ capacities to take up the learning opportunities offered at home and at school. \nConceptualized as compensatory education for poor and culturally and linguistically diverse students\, after-school homework clubs and tutoring programs offer an alternative space for the completion of homework for students whose families may not have access to the forms of capital required to complete homework. \nThis presentation draws on a series of ethnographic studies of homework\, to examine the lived experience of homework for students and their families in socio culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Through case study snapshots from three Australian homework programs\, the presentation will explores the affordances of Homework Support Programs for productively reshaping learner dispositions and agency. \nBiography\nKirsten Hutchison is a senior lecturer in Language and Literacy at Deakin University and teaches in undergraduate\, masters and higher degree by research programs\, with a focus on early and middle years language and literacy teaching\, new and traditional literacies and community literacies. \nHer research and teaching interests are centred on language and literacy and the nexus between education and social justice. Several of her current research projects involve working with teachers and academics to develop digital and culturally responsive pedagogies\, work-integrated learning and internationalised curriculum. TEAL provides teachers with a deep understanding of assessment for learning principles\, as well as access to a bank of EAL-appropriate assessment tools and tasks\, exemplars and work samples for Listening and Speaking and Writing. An online assessment tool for Reading is also being developed. \nThese tools and tasks will assist teachers to assess the English language development of their EAL students\, and to align their assessments with the EAL Companion to AusVELS and the EAL Continuum.
