DESCRIPTION:August 23 from 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm\nOnline\nAre you interested in digital literacies in EAL settings? Join us for the third SIG event. The event will include a reintroduction of the SIG\, followed by a seminar. \nDigital Literacies in EAL SIG is an initiative supported by VicTESOL. It is a group for members of TESOL associations in Australia who are interested in digital literacies and their inclusion in EAL learning. \nResearch presentation – Enhancing collaboration in online learning environments in EAL classrooms \nThis seminar presents strategies for fostering effective collaboration among EAL students in digital online learning environments. It offers insights into the dynamics of student interaction in online classrooms and proposes ways to enhance engagement\, cooperation\, wellbeing\, and mutual understanding. Based on research conducted by Monash University\, the seminar highlights the significance of carefully designed collaborative tasks\, structured use of online platforms\, and the cultivation of an inclusive\, respectful online culture. Innovative digital tools are examined for their creative role in fostering group collaboration. The seminar also identifies the role of teachers in modelling effective communication and ensuring fair contribution from all participants to enhance students’ learning outcomes in EAL\, developing their critical thinking\, and improving their interpersonal skills. This seminar provides valuable insights for educators striving to adapt traditional collaborative learning strategies to digital platforms\, ultimately aiming to foster a more interactive\, engaging online learning experience. \nSpeakers: \nDr Edwin Creely is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Monash University. He has extensive research experience in digital literacies and pedagogies\, technologies and education\, literacy and second language learning\, creativity and creative practices\, initial teacher education\, and artificial intelligence. Edwin has many years of teaching and leadership experience across all sectors in education\, including adult education. With Katrina Tour and Peter Waterhouse\, he co-authored the AMEP Digital Literacies Framework & Guide (Commonwealth of Australia\, 2021) and Enhancing Digital Literacies with Adult English Language Learners (Routledge 2022). \nDr Peter Waterhouse is a Lecturer in the School of Education\, Culture and Society in the Faculty of Education at Monash University. He has been an adult educator\, teacher educator and researcher most of his professional life; teaching\, consulting\, and collaborating across a range of contexts\, from community and workplace settings to Higher Education. His research interests include adult\, lifelong and experiential learning\, adult literacy/ies\, digital literacy/ies and learning beyond the boundaries of schools. With Katrina Tour and Edwin Creely\, he has co-authored the AMEP Digital Literacies Framework & Guide (Commonwealth of Australia\, 2021) and Enhancing Digital Literacies with Adult English Language Learners (Routledge 2022). \nPractice presentation – Using Padlet for collaborative learning with low-literacy and digital literacy adult EAL learners \n‘Padlet is a software people use to make and share content with others. Padlet empowers everyone to make the content they want\, whether it’s a quick bulletin board\, a blog\, or a portfolio.’ Shared content can include texts\, links\, photos and videos. In an educational setting Padlet can be used to brainstorm; to gather students’ answers or feedback; to share findings for collaborative research projects; for online student portfolios or to gather student work. Padlet is easy-to-use and private\, which makes it an ideal digital tool for low-literacy and digital literacy EAL learners. The presenter will share how to use Padlet to learn writing in a collaborative way. She will describe the process of eliciting and constructing a text that precedes writing. She will then describe her experience using Padlet in an adult EAL class – students share their texts on Padlet and collaborate to edit them. \nSpeaker:  \nTanja Rykovska is an experienced English as Additional Language teacher with keen interest in educational technology. She has had opportunities to design\, build and deliver blended and online English language courses. In her leadership capacity as a senior teacher at a large educational institution Tanja has supported teachers learning to use digital technology and finding their ways to teach using digital technology. She considers professional development for educators in this area to be imperative as technology changes and new contexts to use digital technology appear. At the same time\, Tanja understands that digital literacies exist in complex systems\, educational\, social and personal. As a fellow at the International Specialised Skills Institute\, she researched digitalisation in adult education in the USA and Europe. Tanja embraces lifelong learning in her professional and personal life. DESCRIPTION:This session will support teachers as they move from teaching units 1 and 2 of the new VCE English and EAL study design into preparation for units 3 and 4 in 2024. \nThe focus of the presentation will be on making connections between units 1-4\, unpacking the requirements of the School-Assessed Coursework\, and providing practical strategies to assist EAL teachers as they navigate the requirements of the new study. \nPresenter \nKellie Heintz is currently employed as the EAL Curriculum Manager at the VCAA. Prior to this\, she was a lecturer in language and literacy education at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education\, where she trained pre-service secondary English teachers. She also worked at VATE\, was an educational adviser with the Teach for Australia program\, and taught VCE English and EAL in the Catholic sector for 20 years.

DESCRIPTION:Professional learning for EAL teachers in the context of digital transformation in the VET sector\nAn introduction of the European Framework for Digital Competence of Educators (DigCompEdu) and trial of SELFIE for Teachers – an online self-reflection tool for teachers to evaluate their digital literacy skills in the context of professional engagement\, teaching and assessment practices as well as facilitating learners’ use of digital technologies and developing digital skills and literacy. The tool is based on the European Framework for Digital Competence of Educators. The presenter will share her report and her interpretation of it in the context of teaching EAL to adults in Victoria. Teachers can set immediate professional learning goals based on their reports. \nPresenters \n\n\nTanja Rykovska is an experienced English as Additional Language teacher with keen interest in educational technology. It is a group for members of TESOL associations in Australia who are interested in digital literacies and their inclusion in EAL learning. \nResearch presentation – Multimodal digital text creation for language and literacy learning \nIn this presentation\, Grace Oakley will talk about several research projects she has been involved in\, centring on the use of digital technologies for the creation of multimodal digital texts (MDTs) to support language and literacy learning as well as intercultural understanding. She will describe two international projects which involved the creation and exchange of multimodal digital texts between students in Australia\, Japan and China\, and how these exchanges were experienced by teachers and students. Also\, some of the considerations that might enhance or impede such programs will be discussed. Secondly\, Grace will talk about the creation of MDTs in the early years of school to enhance literacy among children from lower socio-economic communities. How the creation of MDTs can support language learning among children for whom English is a Second or Additional language will be highlighted. \nSpeaker: Dr Grace Oakley is an Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Education at the University of Western Australia. She was previously a primary teacher and has had some experience teaching Languages. Her research interests include language and literacy learning and teaching from early childhood to adolescence\, teacher professional development\, and the use of learning technologies from early childhood to adulthood. Her research has included international digital multimodal text exchanges between schools in Australia and Japan\, and schools in Australia and Japan\, to enhance language learning and intercultural understanding. \nPractice presentation – Using multilingual and multimodal texts with EAL students: A teacher’s experience and students sample works \nThis session will look at how multilingual and multimodal texts can be used effectively to promote rich discussions amongst EAL learners in a primary school setting at an intensive English language school. Students were found to be highly engaged and enjoyed exploring the many ways to communicate their ideas using their home languages and English through the Bookcreator app. \nSpeaker: Hien Webb began her teaching career as a language\, science and maths teacher at secondary school levels. She has over 25 years of experience working for Cultural and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities in a range of sectors including community development\, counselling and adult education. She is currently an EAL teacher for the New Arrival Program (NAP) at Collingwood English Language School. She is passionate about developing culturally inclusive curriculum and strategies that develop positive cross-cultural relationships amongst diverse learners. DESCRIPTION:VCE Bridging EAL Units 1 & 2\n24 May 2023\, 4:30pm – 5:30pm\, Online\n\n\nPresentation one: Holistic Approach to Implementating Innovative Teaching and Learning Practices of Bridging EAL \nThis presentation will share a brief overview of the innovative teaching and learning practices of Bridging EAL at Hampton Park Secondary College\, situated in South Eastern Victoria region. Rabecca will discuss how they have adopted a whole school approach to the implementation of Bridging EAL for Year 11 students at their school. She will deliver an overview of their ‘Data wise-based’ (Collaborative process) Bridging EAL program which is run as a compulsory subject alongside of VCE EAL Units 1 and 2 only\, for ‘Excel’ learners of English with specific language and literacy needs \nRabecca Mphande\, current EAL and Language School Transition Program Leader at Hampton Park Secondary College\, has taught Bridging EAL to EAL learners in Year 11 at her school\, from its introduction in 2016 in target Victorian schools. In her previous role as EAL Coordinator\, Rabecca led the facilitation of Bridging EAL Curriculum design\, documentation and implementation within the context of Data Wise\, collaborative processes. Rabecca also has a track record of not only supporting EAL Teacher-teams to effectively plan and deliver their lessons but also teaching EAL across years 10\, 11 and 12 with improved teaching and student learning outcomes.\n\nPresentation Two \nThis presentation will provide a brief overview of the current EAL Bridging study design for the accreditation period of 2022 – 2026.  Carlo and Lucy will discuss how they implement EAL Bridging for Year 11 students at their school located in the North West region of Victoria. They will deliver an overview of their program which is run as a compulsory subject alongside of VCE EAL Unit 1 and 2. \nLucy Nguyen been teaching Bridging EAL for four years. She has experience delivering both the current Bridging study design this study design as well as the last. She has developed the current EAL Bridging Unit for implementation at Mount Ridley College P-12. \nCarlo Cosner has been teaching EAL at Mount Ridley College for the past six years. He has experience in delivering the EAL program across both years 11 and 12 as well as Bridging. DESCRIPTION:Digital Literacies in EAL Special Interest Group (SIG)\nWednesday 22 March 4-5pm\nOnline\nAre you interested in digital literacies in EAL settings? Join us for the first SIG event. The event will include an introduction of the SIG\, followed by a seminar. \nSIG Launch  \nDigital Literacies in EAL SIG is a new initiative supported by VicTESOL. It is a group for members of TESOL associations in Australia who are interested in digital literacies and their inclusion in EAL learning. \nSeminar: \nResearch presentation: What is digital literacy? \nLike traditional\, print-based literacies\, digital literacy refers to a competency or capability with a particular topic\, field or issue. However\, as both conceptual and material notions of the ‘digital’ are slippery\, so too are conceptions of what constitutes being ‘literate’. In fact\, defining what is meant by digital literacy has become more complicated over time. Invasions of privacy\, increasing dataveillance\, and the erosion of the democratic sphere are just some of the complex issues in modern societies that digital literacy is supposed to address. In this presentation\, I will outline what digital literacy is and how it differs from other cognate approaches such as digital rights and digital citizenship. I draw on practical examples and strategies for classroom teachers to incorporate into their practice to develop critical digital literacies. I conclude by outlining what digital literacies cannot achieve\, in particular the issues and challenges that are\, in many respects\, beyond the influence of the teacher and the curriculum. \nPresenter: Dr Luci Pangrazio. Luci is a Chief Investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence of the Digital Child and a senior lecturer in language and literacy at Deakin University. Her research focuses on digital and data literacies\, datafication in the home and school\, and the politics of digital platforms. \nPractice presentation: An online reading program for EAL students: A teacher’s experience \nThis session will discuss the challenges and opportunities of an online reading program for EAL students. While the reading program encouraged students to engage in reading\, there were challenges associated in relation to access to digital technologies. \n  \nPresenter: Louise Whittle. Louise has been a primary school teacher for the last 24 years\, working in the South Eastern public sector as a classroom teacher and casual relief teacher. She has had overseas experiences teaching in the USA and UAE\, where her interest and love of EAL education started. DESCRIPTION:Ready for some creative activities in the EAL classroom? \nLet’s get you and your students out of your seats and up on the floor! \nIn this highly interactive and energising afternoon of professional learning\, EAL/D teachers will learn how to use a variety of performative (arts- based) techniques to invigorate their language teaching within the inspiring space of the NGV. \nPerformative language teaching enables learners to connect their brains\, bodies and voices\, leading to greater retention of language structures and more expressive verbal and non-verbal communication. This approach not only provides meaningful contexts for language use\, but also enriches learning\, engages students and teaches valuable life skills. \nParticipants will attend three workshops to gain hands-on experience using accessible music\, dance and drama strategies\, which can be applied to EAL/D classes across a range of ages\, curricula and English levels. Carmel\, Sharon\, Sally and Jodie will also provide resources\, including a Sing with me! Book/CD\, to support teachers to apply the methods in their classrooms. \nSuitable for those with no experience or a wealth of it! \nRegistration opens at 2:30pm for a 3:00pm start. For over twenty years\, Sally has been teaching dance in a variety of community\, school-based and adult education contexts. She has been a professional dancer and choreographer performing throughout Australia\, Europe\, Japan and the US with Strange Fruit\, Sue Healey\, Born in a Taxi and in her own works. For the past 10 years\, Sally has been teaching ESL in various Adult Education settings\, specializing in Speaking and Pronunciation and bringing her creative movement skills into the EAL classroom to encourage students to explore language learning through kinaesthetic and choreographic processes. \nSharon Duff is an experienced teacher\, educational writer and presenter. She has a passion for including the arts in the EAL/D classroom\, has co-written Highly Commended resources for Urban Lyrebirds and delivered workshops around Australia and overseas.   \nJodie Whitehurst has taught Drama\, English and EAL to students across the  primary\, secondary and adult sectors for more than 20 years. As an ISSI Fellowship recipient\, Jodie has travelled internationally to research the benefits and best practice of teaching EAL through drama\, and through her organisation\, The Language Scene\, she empowers language educators to invigorate their classes by using a range of performative teaching methods. \nCarmel Davies is a passionate arts practioner and teacher with wide experience teaching across the EAL sector\, and has co-authored and published Sing With Me! the May Street Stories and Sing With Me readers. Her ground breaking work using performative language techniques in EAL was recognised with the award of a Churchill Fellowship. Provoked by Alexander McQueen’s radical and lasting impact on fashion and culture\, Luke is designing and handcrafting a rope bondage gown – a garment of vibrantly colourful rope intricately knotted to bind itself to a person and people to each other. Collaborating with model/muse Timothy Stone for this performance and set against the architecture and ever evolving art works of the Temple of Boom\, Luke will create a series of embodied renderings that gradually materialise over time\, and make visible\, queerness within classical antiquity. \nBased in Naarm\, Luke George (he/they) is a multidisciplinary artist creating work that spans performance\, installation\, craft and ropework. SUMMARY:Strategies for Teaching Digital Literacy and Resilience in the Adult EAL Classroom
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, Emily will discuss her research with the ISS institute that focuses on best practice pedagogies of digital literacy skills for adult EAL migrant and refugee learners within the community-based education setting. This cohort encounter significant challenges with digital devices that give them access to information allowing them to participate fully in everyday life\, employment and education opportunities in Australia. Despite the obvious need to build these skills\, many educators have not yet been equipped with the relevant teaching strategies. This presentation is an opportunity to share strategies and tools for teaching digital literacy\, with the aim of supporting teachers to build digital resilience in their own practice and within their students. \nPresenter \nEmily Tucker teaches EAL and digital literacy to beginner level migrants and refugees at Carringbush Adult Education. She has taught EAL in Japan\, Spain and Australia. She holds a Masters in Applied Linguistics. SUMMARY:Effective implementation of translanguaging pedagogy in TESOL classrooms
DESCRIPTION:Effective implementation of translanguaging pedagogy in TESOL classrooms\nThursday\, 9 March 2023 from 4:00pm – 5:00pm\nTranslanguaging strategies and pedagogies are growing in popularity within a variety of TESOL contexts.  Translanguaging refers to the unique linguistic repertoire of an individual in which there are no clear-cut boundaries to separate languages. Translanguaging pedagogy\, therefore\, provides opportunities for learners to engage all their linguistic knowledge (metalinguistic and cultural) to participate in the classroom environment\, enhance their language skills\, and feel that their home languages are valued. This approach to teaching and learning considers additional languages as resources for learning a new language\, rather than as a deficit or a hindrance. Drawing on 20 years of experience teaching languages around the world and extensive research in the field\, Kelly will highlight the benefits of translanguaging in TESOL contexts and specific considerations\, as well as provide examples of translanguaging pedagogies in action. The presentation will include an outline of translanguaging pedagogy\, why it is beneficial\, and how to implement it in your classroom. \nDr Kelly Shoecraft is an Applied Linguist\, currently lecturing in Linguistics and TESOL at Griffith University\, Australia. She is a lifelong educator with a passion for languages and cultures.  Having lived in Australia\, Japan\, England\, France and Canada\, Kelly has extensive experience teaching TESOL in a variety of educational contexts and to all ages.  She has taught English to surfing instructors\, hairdressers\, scientists\, CEO’s\, young children\, as well as academic English in university settings. DESCRIPTION:Our upcoming event with Kellie Heintz from the VCAA will address many of the questions about the new VCE EAL study design asked in the recent VicTESOL survey of teachers. \nThis presentation will focus on the implementation of VCE units 1 and 2 EAL in 2023. New aspects of the study will be unpacked\, with a particular focus on\, the personal response to texts\, the new area of study: crafting texts\, the selection of mentor texts and suggested approaches to the teaching of writing. At the conclusion of the presentation\, there will also be the opportunity for participants to ask questions. \nPresenter \nKellie Heintz is currently employed as the EAL Curriculum Manager at the VCAA. Prior to this\, she was a lecturer in language and literacy education at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education\, where she trained pre-service secondary English teachers. SUMMARY:Developing English through an understanding of how languages work
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, presenters from Lexis Education will explore ways of speeding up our EAL students’ learning of English and learning in English through a focus on how languages work to make meaning. This approach draws on a metalanguage (a language for talking about language) for English\, which can be equally drawn on to contrast how the students’ additional (or other or primary) languages share similarities or differences with English. \nThe presentation will include two very different contexts\, a new arrivals classroom and an Italian language classroom\, where developing such a meta understanding has been a powerful tool in helping students understand how languages work to make meaning. \n\nPresenters \nImogen Lazarus: Imogen Lazarus is an English and Italian teacher specialising in literacy pedagogies\, including Systemic Functional Linguistics\, discipline-specific literacies\, and multiliteracies. \n\n\nBrian Dare: Brian Dare is an international consultant in language and literacy. In recent years\, Brian has been working as a mentor in a number of secondary schools seeking to improve educational outcomes for their students. DESCRIPTION:The ACTA Early Childhood consultancy group has developed a set of six Early Childhood Education Principles as a statement of ACTA’s beliefs and values about home-language-based English as an Additional Language and/or dialect (EAL/D) approach in the Early Childhood years. The ECE Principles encompass all EAL/D learners: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children\, newly arrived\, migrant and Australian born children\, and refugee and refugee-background children\, functioning at all levels of home language and English language proficiency. The ECE Principles bring together the shared thinking of a large group of early childhood practitioners and researchers with EAL/D expertise from across Australia. The intention of the ECE Principles document is to raise awareness of critical issues in home language-based EAL/D education (approaches to ECE programs) for practitioners\, researchers\, policymakers\, key-stakeholders and state\, territory and federal governments. \nThis session is for practitioners and researchers with an interest in the Early Childhood Education field\, and will give an overview of the Principles before providing participants with the opportunity to workshop them. \nYou can view the Principles on the ACTA website here. \n \nThis session is run in collaboration with the Australian Council of TESOL Associations (ACTA)

SUMMARY:Challenges and possibilities in using The Victorian Curriculum F-10: EAL in a Year 7 science unit: A focus on word knowledge.
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar we present the results of an investigation of linguistically responsive vocabulary teaching in a Year 7 science class. We discuss how an EAL and science teacher worked together to apply the whole school’s Three Tiers approach to literacy across the curriculum with reference to the sub-strand word knowledge as one feature of language in The Victorian Curriculum F-10: EAL. Amongst the findings\, we discuss 24 strategies in science vocabulary identified in the investigation. \nPresenters \nEmily Smith is a Science teacher at Edenbrook Secondary College \nAngie Valcanis is an EAL teacher at Blackburn English Language School \nDr Anna Filipi is an Associate Professor in TESOL at Monash University.
