SUMMARY:Effective implementation of translanguaging pedagogy in TESOL classrooms
DESCRIPTION:Effective implementation of translanguaging pedagogy in TESOL classrooms\nThursday\, 9 March 2023 from 4:00pm – 5:00pm\nTranslanguaging strategies and pedagogies are growing in popularity within a variety of TESOL contexts.  Translanguaging refers to the unique linguistic repertoire of an individual in which there are no clear-cut boundaries to separate languages. Translanguaging pedagogy\, therefore\, provides opportunities for learners to engage all their linguistic knowledge (metalinguistic and cultural) to participate in the classroom environment\, enhance their language skills\, and feel that their home languages are valued. This approach to teaching and learning considers additional languages as resources for learning a new language\, rather than as a deficit or a hindrance. Drawing on 20 years of experience teaching languages around the world and extensive research in the field\, Kelly will highlight the benefits of translanguaging in TESOL contexts and specific considerations\, as well as provide examples of translanguaging pedagogies in action. The presentation will include an outline of translanguaging pedagogy\, why it is beneficial\, and how to implement it in your classroom. \nDr Kelly Shoecraft is an Applied Linguist\, currently lecturing in Linguistics and TESOL at Griffith University\, Australia. She is a lifelong educator with a passion for languages and cultures.  Having lived in Australia\, Japan\, England\, France and Canada\, Kelly has extensive experience teaching TESOL in a variety of educational contexts and to all ages.  She has taught English to surfing instructors\, hairdressers\, scientists\, CEO’s\, young children\, as well as academic English in university settings. Her current research interest in translanguaging pedagogies stems from a desire to improve language attitudes in Australia and provide inclusive spaces for all languages\, cultures and identities to be valued.  \nCost \n$10 – VicTESOL members (including members of other state TESOL associations affiliated with ACTA)\n$30 – Non-members

SUMMARY:Developing English through an understanding of how languages work
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, presenters from Lexis Education will explore ways of speeding up our EAL students’ learning of English and learning in English through a focus on how languages work to make meaning. This approach draws on a metalanguage (a language for talking about language) for English\, which can be equally drawn on to contrast how the students’ additional (or other or primary) languages share similarities or differences with English. \nThe presentation will include two very different contexts\, a new arrivals classroom and an Italian language classroom\, where developing such a meta understanding has been a powerful tool in helping students understand how languages work to make meaning. \n\nPresenters \nImogen Lazarus: Imogen Lazarus is an English and Italian teacher specialising in literacy pedagogies\, including Systemic Functional Linguistics\, discipline-specific literacies\, and multiliteracies. \n\n\nBrian Dare: Brian Dare is an international consultant in language and literacy. In recent years\, Brian has been working as a mentor in a number of secondary schools seeking to improve educational outcomes for their students. In this role\, he has delivered a range of professional development sessions focusing on the role of language in teaching and learning across the various learning areas including English\, History\, Science\, Art\, Italian and Mathematics \nPayal Yadav is a PLC Leader at Noble Park English Language School and ‘How Language Works’ Tutor specialising in EAL strategies and incorporating systemic functional grammar in primary EAL classes. \n\nCost \n$10 – VicTESOL members (including members of other state TESOL associations affiliated with ACTA)\n$30 – Non-members

SUMMARY:ACTA Early Childhood Principles - Working Party
DESCRIPTION:The ACTA Early Childhood consultancy group has developed a set of six Early Childhood Education Principles as a statement of ACTA’s beliefs and values about home-language-based English as an Additional Language and/or dialect (EAL/D) approach in the Early Childhood years. The ECE Principles encompass all EAL/D learners: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children\, newly arrived\, migrant and Australian born children\, and refugee and refugee-background children\, functioning at all levels of home language and English language proficiency. The ECE Principles bring together the shared thinking of a large group of early childhood practitioners and researchers with EAL/D expertise from across Australia. The intention of the ECE Principles document is to raise awareness of critical issues in home language-based EAL/D education (approaches to ECE programs) for practitioners\, researchers\, policymakers\, key-stakeholders and state\, territory and federal governments. \nThis session is for practitioners and researchers with an interest in the Early Childhood Education field\, and will give an overview of the Principles before providing participants with the opportunity to workshop them. \nYou can view the Principles on the ACTA website here. \n \nThis session is run in collaboration with the Australian Council of TESOL Associations (ACTA)

SUMMARY:2022 VicTESOL Symposium
DESCRIPTION:2022 VicTESOL Symposium: Professional Identity in TESOL-Finding the Common Ground\nFriday 11 November 2022 from 8:30 am – 4:00 pm\nHow much do language educators working in schools\, Further Education (FE)\, not-for-profit organisations and universities really have in common? Can we really talk about the professional identity of teachers and their freedom for manoeuvre without addressing the kinds of organisation they work for? Is it enough to talk of curriculum-pedagogy-&-assessment\, or does this mask systematic institutional differences that have a more profound influence on learning and teaching? \nThese questions are asked in the abstract of Ben Rampton and Mel Cooke et al.’s 2022 article Sectors and the workplace in language teaching: Differences\, links and alliances? \nThe 2022 VicTESOL Symposium aims to examine the common ground between EAL teachers of all sectors\, and explore what we can learn from one another. \nClick here for detailed information about sessions and speakers at the VicTESOL Symposium 2022. \nTicket Prices\n$130 – VicTESOL Member\n$170 – Non-member \nNon-member Ticket Purchases \nFrom 1 October\, the cost of a VicTESOL member ticket and 2022 VicTESOL membership is only $174! SUMMARY:Enacting translation and translanguaging collaboratively between teachers and learners for knowledge building
DESCRIPTION:Online Webinar \nThursday 24 March\, 4:30-5:30 pm \nTranslanguaging has been increasingly valued as a language pedagogy that helps multilingual learners use their existing resources for linguistic\, cognitive\, and identity development. In many EAL classrooms\, teachers are beginning to implement translanguaging by encouraging learners to use home languages and dictionaries for translation. While such practices enable learners to activate their non-English resources\, they are limited in allowing us to see the transformative value of what translation and translanguaging practices can offer. In this presentation\, we provide an example of how a university lecturer and a graduate student use translation and translanguaging practices to solve a linguistic problem. Through this example\, we highlight how these two practices are different and yet intertwined and allow for collaborative knowledge building in English. Based on this understanding\, we share some examples of translation and translanguaging strategies that do not require teachers and learners to speak the same languages and can be implemented in classrooms. \nDr Julie Choi is Senior Lecturer in Education (Additional Languages) in the Melbourne Graduate School of Education. Her research focuses on pedagogies that promote cultural and linguistic diversity\, inclusion\, and equity. She is co-editor of the book Language and Culture: Reflective Narratives and the Emergence of Identity\, Plurilingualism in Teaching and Learning: Complexities in Contexts and sole author of Creating a Multivocal Self: Autoethnography as Method. \nKailin Liu is an EAL teacher at a government secondary school in Melbourne. Kailin holds a Master of Applied Linguistics and a Master of Teaching in Secondary Education with specialisation in Mandarin and EAL. Kailin has published in the Journal of Language\, Identity & Education and presented at the 2021 American Association for Applied Linguistics Conference. Her professional interests include language and identity\, and multilingual pedagogies for language education. \n$10 – VicTESOL Members/’Friends of VicTESOL’ (including members of other state TESOL associations affiliated with ACTA) \n$30 – Non-members

SUMMARY:Towards a model for a hybrid delivery of EAL
DESCRIPTION:Edwin Creely\, Katrina Tour\, Peter Waterhouse & Elizabeth Keenan \nThursday 4 November\, 4-5:30pm\, online  \n\nThe COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns have forced all educational institutions to deliver their teaching programs online\, including English as an Additional Language (EAL) programs. While this rapid shift in 2020 was challenging\, many institutions and practitioners were able to come up with innovative and effective practices\, utilising digital technologies as effective resources and planning the development of online learning beyond the pandemic. Many educational providers\, especially those in the adult EAL sector\, are now considering a ‘hybrid’ delivery of their programs\, involving face-to-face\, online synchronous and online asynchronous components to serve the needs of their learners. This workshop offers a cohesive model for implementing a hybrid learning approach in EAL settings. This model was conceptualised\, developed and tested through collaboration between a group of  EAL teachers and researchers from Monash University. In the workshop  we provide examples of successful practices drawing on the ideas of flipped learning\, active learning and dialogic pedagogy. The workshop will also provide opportunities for the participants to discuss how this approach can be adapted to their contexts and collaboratively construct a resource to support teaching in a hybrid/flipped mode. The workshop concludes with discussion of implications for the use of a hybrid approach for learning in the EAL sector. \nPresenters \nDr Edwin Creely is a lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Monash University and teaches literacy in initial teacher education programs. His research interests include creativity\, literacy\, creative writing\, digital pedagogy and technology in education. He has wide ranging experience in education from primary and secondary to tertiary and adult education. Central to Edwin’s approach to research is his interest in innovation and creative practices\, multi-disciplinary research and bringing new models and perspectives to educational research and practice. \nDr Katrina Tour is a lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Monash University. Her current research projects investigate how people from migrant and refugee backgrounds use technologies and digital literacies for everyday life\, work and learning. SUMMARY:The Way Forward: How COVID has changed adult EAL delivery
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 19 October\, 4:00-5:30pm (AEST) \nOnline Webinar \nThe arrival of the pandemic saw a fast and impressive pivot to remote learning for all sectors of EAL. But as we move our way forward into a new normal\, has the pandemic led to a re-imagining of the future of adult EAL delivery? In this event\, a range of adult EAL providers share their experiences and insights on the following: \n\nHow has their organization changed the way it delivers EAL programs?\nHow have they refined blended/remote learning?\nWhat has worked? What hasn’t worked?\nWhat feedback have they had – from students\, from teachers?\nHow has remote learning changed the way they teach/view digital literacy skills?\nWhat implications might these changes have for quality and assessment?\nMost importantly\, what permanent changes do they see moving forward to 2022 and beyond?\n\n$10 – VicTESOL Members (including members of other state TESOL associations affiliated with ACTA) \n$20 – Non-members

SUMMARY:Designing culturally responsive and culturally sustaining pedagogy for struggling adolescent and adult EAL learners
DESCRIPTION:Dr Andrea DeCapua \nTuesday 14 September\, 9:00-10:30am (Australian Eastern Standard Time) \nOnline Webinar \n*If you cannot attend the live event but would like access to the recording\, you can get access by registering below. The recording will only be available to registrants in the week after the event.* \nAndrea DeCapua\, Ed.D. is a teacher\, researcher\, and educational consultant. She has held university appointments at several institutions of higher learning in the United States\, including New York University and the University of North Florida. She consults with school districts and professional organizations and is an invited presenter in North America\, Europe\, and now Australia. Her research interests include struggling culturally and linguistically diverse language learners\, particularly students with limited/interrupted formal education (SLIFE) culturally responsive pedagogy\, and cross-cultural awareness training. Dr. DeCapua has published numerous articles\, book chapters\, and books\, including a three-book series on SLIFE with H.W. Marshall: Meeting the Needs of SLIFE (2020); Breaking New Ground: Teaching Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education (2011) and Making the Transition to Classroom Success: Culturally Responsive Teaching for Struggling Language Learners (2013). In addition\, her e-book: SLIFE: What Every Teacher Needs to Know targeted toward all classroom teachers with SLIFE in their classrooms\, appeared in 2019. \nSession Description \nEnglish as an additional language (EAL) learners are a highly diverse group entering our schools with a wide range of backgrounds and needs. Many of them readily develop the necessary language skills\, are able to access grade-level subject area content knowledge\, and progress satisfactorily in school. However\, there are other EAL learners for whom school presents major challenges\, who do not progress smoothly\, and who are at high risk\, particularly those learners who have experienced limited\, interrupted\, or in some cases no formal education.  Despite best intentions\, teachers frequently find that conventional pedagogical practices are not effective with this population. While there are numerous reasons why these learners struggle and accepted pedagogical practices are largely ineffective\, I argue that it is not only the new language and unfamiliar content\, but also – and more critically – the nature of formal education itself that is a key barrier to their success. I outline the Mutually Adaptive Learning Paradigm (MALP®)\, a culturally responsive instructional model that builds bridges to formal education for struggling culturally and linguistically diverse learners.  This model promotes academic achievement by helping these learners access the literacy practices and academic ways of thinking of our schools and contemporary society while honoring and respecting their own learning paradigm.  I conclude by examining ways to infuse this model into the classroom through project-based learning. \n$10 – VicTESOL Members (including state associations affiliated with ACTA) \n$20 – Non-members \n*If you cannot attend the live event but would like access to the recording\, you can get access by registering below. SUMMARY:VicTESOL Symposium 2021 - TESOL in a time of COVID: implications and possibilities
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday August 31\, 4-5:30 pm \nOnline Event \nVicTESOL\, the state association for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) & Multicultural Education\, is holding our next annual Symposium on Tuesday 31 August. This will be live online from 4-5:30pm AEST.  For this event\, we have a panel of speakers\, experts in TESOL and multicultural education and related fields who will discuss what they see as implications of the COVID pandemic for the field of teaching English as an Additional Language (EAL) in Victoria and Australia.   \nThey will discuss what TESOL might look like in the next few years and in the longer term as a result of what we are currently experiencing. With the pausing and slowing of some programs during the pandemic\, is there a chance that TESOL and other programs may change?  Is there a chance that while there are no new arrivals that existing programs and services will be affected\, not only in the short term\, but also in the longer term? How might this look? What might be some of the advantages of possible changes? What might be some less positive consequences of change during and post COVID? What can we do to prepare ourselves for ensuring we maintain and build on the quality of EAL and associated learning and support that has been established over many\, many years? \nPanelists: \nJessica Bishop\, Migrant Information Centre (Eastern Melbourne) \nMargaret Corrigan\, CEO of Carringbush Adult Education and President of the Australian Council of TESOL associations \nDr Susan Creagh\, Honorary Senior Lecturer\, School of Education\, The University of Queensland \nAssociate Professor Russell Cross\, Language and Literacy Education\, Melbourne Graduate School of Education \nCarmel Guerra\, Director and Chief Executive Officer\, Centre for Multicultural Youth \nMark Melican\, Principal of Blackburn English Language School \nMatt Rodger\, Senior Schools Support Officer – RESP Education & Early Years Program Practice & Sector Development\, The Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture \nChermaine Thomas\, Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools Ltd (MACS) \n  \n  \n
