DESCRIPTION:Tuesday March 30\, 4:30-6:00 pm \nOnline Event \nJoin us for an afternoon of sharing on the topic of multimedia use in the adult TESOL classroom. The session will begin with three teachers sharing how they use multimedia in their practice. \nFiona Norquay from Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre will demonstrate how she uses ABC’s ‘90 second news’ program with intermediate level students. Angela Fourtounis from RMIT will share her knowledge of useful apps for learning – Padlet and Mentimeter. DESCRIPTION:Jenny Robins \nThursday 4 March 2021\, 4-5:30 pm (AEDT) \nOnline Event \nJenny Robins began as a volunteer in 2011\, then became a qualified teacher\, working with adult migrants\, people from refugee backgrounds and people seeking asylum to help them improve their English. \nIn 2017 Jenny decided to improve her skills and enrolled in a Masters of Learning Intervention in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Melbourne. She has found this invaluable as the course’s students are encouraged to tailor the subjects’ assignments to their context and needs and those of their students. Jenny currently works at Yarraville Community Centre. \nIn her Masters’ literacy subject students had to design\, implement and report on an intervention with their students. Jenny chose to help her students with their spelling\, and this presentation describes the intervention she designed and delivered. The intervention’s activities revolved around the multiple ways long vowels can be spelt\, but its main focus was on teaching the students spelling strategies which they could apply later. \nJenny will be presenting on her experience with teaching adults\, however the session is open to teachers from all sectors and the ideas in the session are transferable and applicable to all age groups. \n$10 – VicTESOL member ticket (including other state & territory TESOL associations affiliated with ACTA) \n$20 – Non-member ticket

This includes setting up a government funded bridging program for refugee students and most recently as Language Centre and EAL coordinator managing the learning of international students and teaching staff within that program. She has run numerous in-house in-services for staff on teaching strategies for EAL students. \nMadeline Oh has 10 years experience in teaching EAL. She has spent this time working in the government sector teaching secondary school students. She currently works as an EAL coordinator. DESCRIPTION:Luke Treadwell & Tanja Rykovska\, AMES Australia\nWednesday 18 November\, 4:00-5:30pm AEDT\nOnline Event\nThis workshop is based on the premise that digital literacy is vital for living\, learning\, and working in contemporary Australian society and therefore needs to be a key feature as both a support and an outcome of any relevant EAL program. The session will detail the experience and learnings of one such program that was specifically designed (pre-COVID) to engage low level EAL learners in online learning. The session will cover the basic course design principles of our EAL online courses\, the strategies developed to engage and support the learners and their challenges and achievements learning in an online environment. Luke and Tanja’s presentation will be followed by Q&A and small group discussion. \nLuke Treadwell is a senior teacher with many years of program and project management in AMES. Luke has taught EAL students for many years across many programs and has recently worked extensively with ASMES online learning program. \nTanja Rykovska is an EAL teacher with extensive experience teaching English\, designing and delivering EAL programs in various settings and for diverse cohorts. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 28 October\, 4-5pm \nPanel Discussion and Q&A \nLaurence Guttmann\, Rosemary Abboud\, Margaret Corrigan\, and Julia Lippold \nFree Online Event – Click here to register \nAre you a pre-service teacher about to embark on your first year of teaching in an EAL classroom? \nVicTESOL has assembled a panel of experienced leaders from across educational sectors to give tips and advice for thriving in the first year of teaching. \nThe panel will discuss how to apply for and successfully gain employment\, what to expect as a graduate teacher\, and some of the fundamental principles and strategies of EAL teaching and learning. \nSanam Maner\, a pre-service teacher from La Trobe University\, will be hosting the session. \nPanel Members: \nRosemary Abboud is a Leading Teacher EAL/EAL Specialist at Dandenong North Primary School\, she has been teaching for 32 years and has BA in Linguistics and a Graduate Diploma in TESOL. \nAs well as leading and teaching in the EAL area\, Rosemary supports classroom teachers by providing advice and resources to help classroom teachers meet the needs of EAL students. She is a passionate advocate for New Arrival Students and their transitions from the New Arrivals Program to mainstream school placements. In 2005\, she piloted a Transition EAL Program\, which has become a crucial part of a model for EAL Exemplar advice provided by the Department of Education and Training. She has contributed to the wider educational system by participating in curriculum development at local and regional levels\, as well as providing professional development for EAL and mainstream teachers. \nLaurence Guttmann is Assistant Principal of Western English Language School (WELS) in Braybrook\, where he has taught for over 10 years. He is interested in Functional Grammar\, which is an important component of the WELS curriculum. He is passionate about working with his students and colleagues to ensure that WELS provides the best possible education for new arrival students. \nMargaret Corrigan has extensive experience in a range of educational settings in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. As CEO of Carringbush Adult Education\, a not-for-profit Registered Training Organisation\, she oversees the delivery of many programs\, including EAL\, work readiness\, family literacy and pathways guidance. She is the current President of ACTA and Vice President of VicTESOL. \nJulia Lippold is an EAL and TESOL specialist teacher and ‘teacherpreneaur’ with over 14 years of TESOL teaching experience. She has taught in both the New Arrivals and independent sectors\, and also in Korea. She began her formal teaching career at Blackburn English Language School in Melbourne and as a tutor working with refugees on Temporary Protection Visas. At Blackburn ELS\, Julia worked as a Leading Teacher\, Head of Senior School\, and International Student Coordinator maintaining close links with the International Division at the Victorian Department of Education and Training. Julia currently teaches at Lauriston Girls’ School in the role of EAL Coordinator (Years 7-12) where she has had an integral role in establishing the EAL program. Julia is a former member of the Executive Board of the Australian Council of TESOL Associations (ACTA)\, a current committee member of ATCA\, VicTESOL and VATE\, is actively involved in the VCAA F-10 EAL Curriculum for Victorian Schools Consultation Review\, is a member of the VCAA VCE Examination Development EAL Reviewing Panel\, and is the founder and creator of Zealous English. Julia is passionate about teaching EAL and creating user-friendly resources for both teachers and students. \n\n  \n  \n

Get ideas and strategies from three experienced EAL teachers and join us afterwards for small group discussions. \nPresenters \nStephanie Georgiou has more than 18 years of experience in teaching EAL. She has worked in the adult\, Catholic and government sectors\, continuing her ongoing tenure at the Department of Education and Training.  She has managed and coordinated multiple programmes throughout her career. This includes setting up a government funded bridging program for refugee students and most recently as Language Centre and EAL coordinator managing the learning of international students and teaching staff within that program. She has run numerous in-house in-services for staff on teaching strategies for EAL students. \nMaria Papasotiriou is the Head of EAL at Wellington Secondary College\, a large government secondary school in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne. She is an experienced VCE EAL teacher and has taught local and international students from culturally diverse backgrounds\, including refugees with disrupted schooling. She has previously presented at the VATE Conference and has been an English assessor for VCAA. \nNaomi Weiler is the EAL Unit 1-4 Coordinator and Gifted Learners’ Leader at St Francis Xavier College. Naomi has ten-years teaching experience in English\, EAL\, Humanities and Accelerated Subjects. Naomi will be presenting on Section A of the exam. Her approach to the Listening Task is based on the explicit teaching of skills and knowledge to aural content. \nAll participants in this session will also receive access to the resources from the Meet the VCE EAL Assessors webinar held earlier in the year. She has been the Head of Learning Resources at Loyola College\, a Catholic Secondary co-educational College in Watsonia from 2015- 2019. Hope started her life as a Maths teacher in 2002. She then returned to study completing a Master of Information Management at RMIT. Prior to joining Loyola in 2015\, Hope spent a number of years as a Teacher-Librarian at St. Monica’s College. \nFocus on upper secondary students (age 15 – 18 years) \nErin Wamala has previously worked in children’s publishing and bookselling and is now a Teacher Librarian at Trinity Grammar School in Melbourne. She is also currently an Older Readers Judge for the Children’s Book Council of Australian Awards. \nFocus on adults (18 years plus) \nJenny Peck is the manager of the Languages and Multicultural Education Resource Centre (LMERC)\, a small specialised Department of Education and Training library for educators across all sectors including early childhood and adult education. The LMERC library specialises in resources to support delivery of the Victorian Curriculum in the areas of English as an Additional Language\, Languages\, Cross Curriculum Priority areas and Intercultural Capability. He then rose to fame after his winning performance was viewed online over four million times in 24 hours. Now 15\, Solli is a globally renowned poet and keynote speaker; having led workshops; performed and spoken at conferences\, schools and universities. Additionally (and passionately)\, Solli is an environmental activist and humanitarian who works closely as an ambassador for four charities and organisations. \nSolli’s first book Limelight\, was published in 2018 and has received accolades for its capacity to engage students in poetry\, having also won a Nautilus Book Award in 2019 for best middle-grade nonfiction. In the EAL setting\, students can find understanding syntactical metalanguage as well as abstract concepts challenging. So how do we make grammar accessible to EAL students? My approach to teaching grammar is\, at its core\, deductive rather than didactic encouraging students to figure out rules and patterns deductively rather than being expressly instructed. Getting students involved in the learning process is key to this method: a highly visual\, contextualised and participatory pedagogy. \nThis session will guide teachers through this deductive method as they too participate in the learning process. Topics covered will include: \n– Why is grammar so important?\n– Connections to the F-10 EAL Curriculum and National Curriculum (EAL Achievement Standards)\n– Deductive pedagogy\n– Sample grammar lessons and teaching tips aimed at EAL students (including\, phrasal verbs\, the conditional\, nominalisation\, shades of modality\, coordinating and subordinating conjunctions\, punctuation and parts of speech) \nJulia Lippold is an EAL and TESOL specialist teacher and ‘teacherpenerur’ with over 14 years of TESOL teaching experience. She has taught in both the New Arrivals and independent sectors\, and also in Korea. She began her formal teaching career at Blackburn English Language School in Melbourne and as a volunteer tutor working with refugees on Temporary Protection Visas. At Blackburn ELS\, Julia worked as a Leading Teacher\, Head of Senior School\, and International Student Coordinator maintaining close links with the International Division at the Victorian Department of Education and Training. Julia currently teaches at Lauriston Girls’ School in the role of EAL Coordinator (Years 7-12) where she has had an integral role in establishing the EAL program. Julia holds a Bachelor of Arts (Languages) with Honours\, a Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary)\, a Master of Public and International Law and a Graduate Certificate in Literary Classics. In addition to teaching\, she supports staff in accommodating the needs of EAL students and delivers staff professional learning workshops. Participants are asked to send in a work sample such as lesson plan\, unit planner\, assessment task or worksheet they are currently using or are planning to use in Term 3 so that GELC staff can formulate recommendations tailored specifically to your needs. \nThis session is aimed at primary and secondary school teachers. \nRuth Hibburt is a highly accomplished teacher with over 12 years experience teaching in Victorian Secondary Schools 7-12 and English Language Centres P-10. She specialises in teaching the academic language of Mathematics and Science through planning\, engagement\, curriculum development\, assessment and reporting for EAL Maths and Science P-10. Ruth is a positive change maker in education and an expert in building skills and confidence with teachers and students. She has taught over 3000 students from a diverse range of social backgrounds and learning needs. Ruth currently works in Victorian schools as a Network Numeracy Improvement Teacher. \nThe GELC staff are all qualified specialist EAL teachers with many years experience in delivering English language programs. GELC programs develop the English language knowledge and skills for students to access the Victorian curriculum across a range of subjects areas including maths\, science\, humanities and ICT. DESCRIPTION:Skye Playsted \nThursday 14 May\, 4-5pm \nOnline Webinar \nWhen we think of the term ‘culture’\, it can be easy to focus on concrete elements such as art\, music\, clothing or food. However\, these visible aspects are only the tip of the cultural iceberg (Ting-Toomey & Chung\, 2011). Deeper cultural assumptions are hidden from view and are not as easy to identify. These can include our beliefs about learning and teaching\, expectations of politeness\, values\, social norms or unspoken conversational ‘taboos’. Misunderstandings can easily occur across cultures in these areas. A deeper understanding of the ways in which culture and language influence our views of the world and how we communicate is needed (DeCapua & Wintergerst\, 2016). Drawing on DeCapua’s (2018) Culture Myths: Applying Second Language Research to Classroom Teaching\, this session offers teachers an opportunity to consider and ‘unpack’ some commonly held ‘myths’ about culture which affect learning and teaching in the adult EAL classroom. \nSkye Playsted is an educator with over 20 years of teaching experience as a second language and music teacher in Australian schools. She has taught English to adult students as a volunteer in community refugee support groups\, and has been teaching in vocational colleges and university academic English programs in the Refugee Welcome Zone of Toowoomba\, Queensland. Skye completed her M Ed (TESOL) via distance through the University of Wollongong\, NSW\, and has recently moved to Brisbane with her family. Examples will be shown of how engaging lessons can be conducted online for F-10 EAL learners at all levels. \nThis professional learning session will focus on working with EAL students who will have access to videoconferencing software at home. \nParticipants are encouraged to submit questions in advance to be addressed by the panel during the Q and A session. \nAbout the Virtual EAL New Arrivals Program [VNAP]\nThe Virtual EAL New Arrivals Program supports new arrival EAL students using video conferencing sessions delivered through a distance education model at the Victorian School of Languages (VSL). The Virtual EAL New Arrivals Program (VNAP) is specifically for newly-arrived EAL learners in remote country schools who cannot access an English Language School or English Language Centre. \nVictoria Butterfield is co-coordinator and a teacher in the Virtual EAL New Arrivals Program (VNAP). She is a highly accomplished EAL teacher who has taught in English Language Schools and Centres in Victoria for the past twelve years. Since 2017\, Victoria has taught in the Virtual EAL New Arrivals Program to support newly-arrived EAL learners and teachers in regional Victoria. \nVoula Mackenzie is an experienced EAL\, Information Technology and Humanities teacher\, who has taught in Victorian secondary schools\, English Language centres and most recently at the Virtual EAL New Arrivals Program (Distance Education) hosted at the Victorian School of languages campus in Thornbury. Since 2014\, Voula has led the development of the Virtual EAL program\, which began as a pilot project\, and is now an established program with 65 students throughout rural Victoria. Voula co-coordinates the program. \nHeena Sharma is a generalist teacher specialising in EAL. She has worked in government Primary schools for over 15 years and in collaboration with Panayiota Kai teaching EAL. Heena Sharma joined the Virtual EAL New Arrivals Program team in 2017. \nPanayiota Kai is a generalist teacher specialising in Languages and EAL. She has taught in government Primary and Secondary schools for over 20 years. Panayiota has worked as an EAL Coach\, trained EAL Leaders and offered PD on EAL issues. She completed her Masters thesis on VCE listening task assessment at the University of Melbourne and is currently training undergraduate and post graduate teachers at La Trobe University in literacy\, secondary EAL pedagogy and curriculum and interdisciplinary education. DESCRIPTION:Janet Armitage\nWednesday 4 March\, 3:45-4:45pm\nFree Webinar\nFunctional Multilingualism/Translanguaging are currently popular terms being researched\, discussed and adapted to diverse learning settings. This paper is a practical response to the current interest in Translanguaging\, suggesting ways this might look in EALD classrooms and what teachers might consider when developing Translanguaging activities. With the intention of bringing students’ linguistic and cultural knowledge to the fore through redesigning Australian Curriculum and SACE task\, four tasks\, along with samples of student work\, will be presented and discussed. \nJanet Armitage currently works for the South Australian Department for Education in the role of EAL/D Hub Coach supporting teachers in professional development that recognises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander EALD learners. Janet undertook action research in a large secondary school in South Australia where she was an EALD teacher and EALD & Languages Coordinator. Would you like some guidance and support from three experienced EAL teachers who have been in your shoes before? Meet Julia Lippold\, Debra Icely and Rebecca Gillies for a discussion forum and presentation on tips for teaching VCE EAL for the first time. Julia\, Deborah and Rebecca will join forces to bring their extensive EAL teaching experience to VicTESOL members and guests with the aim of providing practical suggestions on how to transfer EAL pedagogy into the VCE context. An overview/breakdown of the current VCE EAL Study Design will be included\, in addition to tips on meeting the needs of our EAL learners within the VCE context. The aim of the session is also to respond to participants’ questions directly\, therefore a short questionnaire will be completed in the registration process and questions will be addressed during the session. \nThis session will be held at The Immigration Museum. Discover the array of resources and excursion possibilities for your classes in 2020! \nPresenters:  \nJulia Lippold is an EAL and TESOL specialist teacher and ‘teacherpenerur’ with over 14 years of TESOL teaching experience. She has taught in both the New Arrivals and independent sectors\, and also in Korea. She began her formal teaching career at Blackburn English Language School in Melbourne and as a volunteer tutor working with refugees on Temporary Protection Visas. At Blackburn ELS\, Julia worked as a Leading Teacher\, Head of Senior School\, and International Student Coordinator maintaining close links with the International Division at the Victorian Department of Education and Training. Julia currently teaches at Lauriston Girls’ School in the role of EAL Coordinator (Years 7-12) where she has had an integral role in establishing the EAL program. Julia holds a Bachelor of Arts (Languages) with Honours\, a Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary)\, a Master of Public and International Law and a Graduate Certificate in Literary Classics. In addition to teaching\, she supports staff in accommodating the needs of EAL students and delivers staff professional learning workshops. Julia is a member of the Executive Board of the Australian Council of TESOL Associations (ACTA)\, an affiliate of both VicTESOL and VATE\, is actively involved in the VCAA F-10 EAL Curriculum for Victorian Schools Consultation Review\, is a member of the VCAA VCE Examination Development EAL Reviewing Panel\, and is the founder and creator of Zealous English. Julia is passionate about teaching EAL and creating user-friendly resources for both teachers and students.   \nRebecca (Bec) Gillies has over 11 years’ experience teaching EAL students\, most recently at VCE level. Originally focused on a corporate career\, Bec completed a Bachelor of Business Studies (Marketing)\, then worked in Japan before travelling extensively. Her experiences living and working in different cultures have given her an insight into the challenges and rewards of language acquisition. Holding a Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary)\, Bec has taught in both the Government and Independent sectors\, commencing her second career in the New Arrivals Program at Blackburn English Language School in Melbourne. Bec currently teaches EAL at Korowa Anglican Girls’ School where she has developed curriculum and resources for Years 7-12. In addition to teaching\, she supports students and colleagues to ensure EAL learners achieve to the best of their ability\, regardless of their English language competency. Bec is an active member of VicTESOL and VATE.  \nDebra Icely has taught in public schools in Victoria for over 30 years\, with  20 + years at Princes Hill SC- teaching yrs 7-12 EAL students in a mainstream school setting. Debra has presented at VicTESOL PL sessions on VCE EAL\, VATE EAL Teachers’ Days & VATE/VicTESOL Student Revision Lectures. She has been a member of the VicTESOL committee for several years & has previously chaired the VCE EAL sub commitee of VicTESOL. \nVicTESOL Member $10\nNon-member $20

DESCRIPTION:Glynis Rose & Rosemary McLoughlin \nTuesday 11 February\, 4-5:30 pm\, Online event \nIn this session\, Glynis and Rosemary will provide feedback on student performance in the 2019 VCE EAL exam\, including analysis of student performance in each section and examples of student responses. There will be opportunities for you to ask questions and gain valuable insight into how the exam is assessed.
