SUMMARY:Why a Meme Is Never Just a Meme: Creating Meaningful Digital Multimodal Composing Tasks in the Language Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Why a Meme Is Never Just a Meme: Creating Meaningful Digital Multimodal Composing Tasks in the Language Classroom\nThursday 10 December 2026\, 4:00pm – 5:00pm AEDT\, Online\nMemes\, videos\, digital stories and podcasts offer creative ways for students to express themselves and engage with language. But how can teachers ensure these activities support meaningful learning rather than simply producing digital content? And how can digital composing tasks create opportunities for students to explore language\, identity and belonging?\nIn this session\, Melissa Jufenna Slamet from the University of Melbourne will explore how digital multimodal composing can support student voice\, creativity and critical engagement in language classrooms. Drawing on her research in TESOL teacher education\, Melissa will share classroom examples showing how a student’s meme and video project opened up conversations about language\, identity\, belonging and linguistic discrimination.\n\nParticipants will be invited to reflect on their own teaching practices and consider practical ways to design digital composing tasks that encourage discussion\, reflection and deeper learning. The session will explore how teachers can move beyond focusing on finished digital products to create linguistically and culturally responsive learning experiences that connect with students’ lives and perspectives.\n\nSpeaker\nMelissa Jufenna Slamet is a PhD candidate in Language and Literacy Education at the University of Melbourne and teaches in the Master of TESOL program. Her research\, published in leading international journals\, explores how digital technologies\, critical multilingualism and creative pedagogies can support meaningful learning in language education. She is particularly interested in helping learners connect language learning with identity\, lived experiences and contemporary social issues.\n\nCost\n$15 – VicTESOL members (including members of other state TESOL associations)\n$40 – Non-members\nBecome a member today for member prices!\nPlease note: VicTESOL is a not-for-profit organisation. Your registration ensures we can continue to offer high-quality professional learning.\n\nTerms and Conditions:\nRegistrations are per participant.
