Generative AI for Translanguaging Pedagogies: Opportunities and Challenges in Adult English Language Classrooms

19 March 2026, 5:30pm – 6:30pm, AEDT, Online

Summary

The online professional learning session, Generative AI for Translanguaging Pedagogies: Opportunities and Challenges in Adult English Language Classrooms, explored how educators can harness generative AI to better support the linguistic diversity of adult English language learners. The session highlighted translanguaging as a valuable teaching approach, enabling learners to draw on their full linguistic repertoire to support both language acquisition and broader learning. Presenters examined common challenges in implementing translanguaging, particularly when teachers do not share learners’ home languages, and demonstrated how generative AI can help bridge these gaps. Practical examples included the co-creation of multilingual texts, the use of multilingual speech recognition, and real-time multilingual assistance, illustrating how AI can expand opportunities for participation and engagement.

The session also emphasised that access to and benefits from AI are not evenly distributed, requiring thoughtful and inclusive design by educators to ensure equitable learning opportunities. Key considerations and future directions were outlined for practitioners working at the intersection of translanguaging pedagogy and emerging technologies, encouraging critical and creative use of AI to value and sustain learners’ diverse linguistic resources. The session was presented by Dr Katrina Tour, Dr Edwin Creely and Associate Professor Marianne Turner of Monash University, whose work focuses on digital literacies, multilingual education, and the integration of technology in language learning.
