New Arrivals in the Mainstream Classroom: Practical Teaching Strategies

Thursday 13 August 2026 4:00pm – 5:00pm AET, Online

As increasing numbers of newly arrived students transition into mainstream schools, teachers are seeking practical strategies to support language development, engagement and wellbeing across all learning areas.

In this session, Michele Bond and Jo Rochford, Outreach Coordinators with the Victorian English Language Schools system, will share insights into the experiences and learning needs of newly arrived students and the role mainstream teachers play in supporting successful transitions. Drawing on their extensive experience working alongside schools, they will explore effective approaches to creating inclusive classrooms, scaffolding learning, and supporting EAL students to participate and thrive.

Participants will leave with practical strategies and resources to strengthen support for newly arrived learners in mainstream settings.
