Supporting Older Adolescent Arrivals: Navigating the Space Between School and Adulthood

For young people who arrive in Australia during their later teenage years, settlement is often shaped by a unique set of challenges. Some arrive with significant responsibilities and life experience, having worked, lived independently or supported family members. Others dream of a “normal” school experience but find themselves excluded from mainstream educational pathways because of their age.
In this session, Lindsey Hogg and colleagues from Foundation House’s Ucan2 program will explore the experiences of refugee and migrant young people who arrive in Australia during adolescence. Participants will gain insight into the educational, social and emotional challenges faced by these young people, including navigating systems that can leave them feeling caught between childhood and adulthood.
The session will also highlight programs and supports designed to foster belonging, wellbeing, social connection and educational engagement for young people who may not have access to traditional school experiences. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of this often-overlooked cohort and practical ideas for connecting young people with appropriate opportunities and supports.
Speaker
Lindsey Hogg is a Professional Learning Officer in the Foundation House Schools Support program. Lindsey has a background in developing and facilitating professional learning to support capability building in schools and organisations working with children, young people and families of refugee backgrounds.
