‘Students working things out for themselves.’

This principle is at the heart of Julia Lippold’s approach to teaching grammar.

Julia started the session by explaining why teaching grammar is important and the challenges of teaching grammar, before explaining why she uses a deductive approach rather than a didactic one.

Throughout the presentation, Julia focussed on two areas of grammar – parts of speech and nominalisation. Her presentation was punctuated by short, sharp activities which put participants in the position of their students.

Julia also very generously shared her presentation, resources and the recording with participants and VicTESOL members after the event. We thank her for sharing her expertise.

The session was very well reviewed with one participant reflecting, “Such a knowledgeable and experienced presenter today. So relevant to both EAL and mainstream English – I just loved it!”
