The Science of Reading in TESOL: Challenges, Opportunities, and Practical Approaches

8 May 2025, 5:30pm – 6:30pm, AEDT, Online

Summary

This session explores the body of research from science of reading literature and the impact of these teaching strategies on EAL learners. Anh Phan unpacked the research behind the science of reading and the impact of teaching morphology and phonological awareness. She challenged the assumption that the science of reading is primarily about teaching phonics to promote deeper discussion on the teaching methodologies arising from the research body. The session stimulated deep discussion for EAL teachers as to the challenges and opportunities for EAL learners in these approaches to teaching reading including the awareness and value of first language in these methods.

Anh Phan has been a secondary EAL teacher since 2014 and is now also a qualified speech pathologist. Her journey with the Science of Reading began in early 2021, and she has continued to delve deeper into it ever since. During her time at Western English Language School, she worked collaboratively within the curriculum team to redevelop the school’s reading curriculum and assessments.
