Measuring EAL Students’ Growth Using Visible Learning and Data – Secondary *SOLD OUT*

May 20, 2019 from 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

- $10.00 – $20.00

Jesus Camacho-Morles and Julia Lippold
Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership, North Melbourne
Monday 20th May, 5-6:30pm

“When teaching and learning are visible there is a greater likelihood of students reaching higher levels of achievement” (John Hattie).

This session will focus on the nexus between data analytics and EAL student growth. Jesus Camacho-Morles and Julia Lippold will present together on the importance of data collection in measuring students’ growth within the EAL setting. Data analytics is crucial in the “information age” for professionals as well as students. Schools are essentially responsible for using data to inform decisions at the school, class and individual student level. However, what role does the individual EAL teacher play in this? How can we move from simply placing students on the EAL Developmental Continuum as an assessment tool for English language proficiency to evaluating the progress of our students over time? Competence based assessment is only part of the work we should be doing. How do we measure these other student, teacher and school related factors that are associated with educational outcomes of EAL students? In essence, there is a need for collecting reliable and valid evidence as opposed to judgement.

The use of TEAL in conjunction with Jesus’ ‘Learning Growth Estimator’ (an assessment tool that estimates the amount of learning growth achieved by students in a given period, and uses John Hattie’s ‘Visible Learning’ framework for interpretation) will be discussed, as well as examples from data collected in middle years EAL classes at Lauriston Girls’ School over the course of 2018. How this data has been used to inform teaching and curriculum development in the years 7-10 EAL curriculum in 2019 will also be revealed.

This session is designed for secondary school teachers.
