VicTESOL Webinar: TEAL Resources for Assessment of EAL learners

The webinar will provide an overview of the TEAL (Tools for enhancing assessment literacy of Teachers of English as an Additional Language) online resources for EAL and mainstream teachers who are new to the resource, or would like a refresher to reacquaint themselves to the resource.

Information

The webinar will be suitable for school-based teams of EAL specialists and their mainstream colleagues. The overview will explain how the resources can be used to better understand issues in assessing EAL learners, and how the standardised assessment  tasks on the website can be used to provide benchmarked assessments of EAL learners in schools. The presentation will guide participants through the major resources on the TEAL website and provide. Recent and forthcoming changes and updates to the website will be explained, as well as how the TEAL website relates to the forthcoming Victorian Curriculum will be explained. There will be opportunities for participants to ask questions during the webinar.

 

Presenter: Dr Alan Williams & Janet Saker

Dr Alan Williams has been member of the TEAL project team at UNSW since 2014. He previously worked in TESOL teacher education and research for 24 years at La Trobe University, and the Melbourne Graduate School of Education at the University of Melbourne. Prior to that he worked as a mainstream teacher and then EAL teacher in the New Arrivals Program, and in secondary schools in Victoria, London in the UK, and Vancouver, British Columbia, in Canada. He has a long history of involvement in EAL curriculum and assessment projects in Victoria and nationally.

 

Janet Saker worked for over 20 years in the ESL/EAL unit of the Department of Education, Victoria, developing range of EAL curriculum and assessment materials, including the ESL Companion to the English CSF, the EAL AusVELS, ESL Course Advice, EAL policy documents, professional learning materials and teaching resources. She also worked on the TEAL project, developing oral and writing assessment tools and units of work.
