Translanguaging has been increasingly valued as a language pedagogy that helps multilingual learners use their existing resources for linguistic, cognitive, and identity development. In many EAL classrooms, teachers are beginning to implement translanguaging by encouraging learners to use home languages and dictionaries for translation. While such practices enable learners to activate their non-English resources, they are limited in allowing us to see the transformative value of what translation and translanguaging practices can offer. In this presentation, we provide an example of how a university lecturer and a graduate student use translation and translanguaging practices to solve a linguistic problem. Through this example, we highlight how these two practices are different and yet intertwined and allow for collaborative knowledge building in English. Based on this understanding, we share some examples of translation and translanguaging strategies that do not require teachers and learners to speak the same languages and can be implemented in classrooms.
Dr Julie Choi is Senior Lecturer in Education (Additional Languages) in the Melbourne Graduate School of Education. Her research focuses on pedagogies that promote cultural and linguistic diversity, inclusion, and equity. She is co-editor of the book Language and Culture: Reflective Narratives and the Emergence of Identity, Plurilingualism in Teaching and Learning: Complexities in Contexts and sole author of Creating a Multivocal Self: Autoethnography as Method.
Kailin Liu is an EAL teacher at a government secondary school in Melbourne. Kailin holds a Master of Applied Linguistics and a Master of Teaching in Secondary Education with specialisation in Mandarin and EAL. Kailin has published in the Journal of Language, Identity & Education and presented at the 2021 American Association for Applied Linguistics Conference. Her professional interests include language and identity, and multilingual pedagogies for language education.
