Teaching Refugee Students – A Unique Perspective

September 17, 2018 from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

- $10.00 – $20.00

Dr Judith Thomas

University of Adelaide

Dr Judith Thomas will present the findings from her recent doctoral study. She investigated the prior learning experiences and perspectives of nineteen South Sudanese refugee secondary students and two teachers. In open-ended interviews, they talked about learning in their homeland, compared to their mainstream schooling experiences in Adelaide. Understanding this unique culture together with the hurdles faced upon arrival can provide insights into their distinctive learning journeys for teachers. She will also discuss the role of gender.

Dr Thomas holds a doctorate on the learning experiences of refugee secondary students. She has also taught secondary trainee teachers of EAL/D students at tertiary level. Judith is a dedicated educator and is passionate about helping students achieve success regardless of ability and background.

Members $10 / Non-members $20
